My Review Of "Planet Earth" On My HDTV

We just bought a Blue ray HD DVD player for our HDTV. After we got it hooked up, which took a while... I, for some reason or another just realized that I did not have any HD movies for me to watch on it. Well I already knew which one I wanted to see first and that was Planet Earth. So I got on the internet and purchased it from an online store.

In the beginning of it, it shows Angel falls... the highest water fall in the world. Then it starts to break off from there and shows the extraordinary animals that live in the freshwater environment. Another thing Planet Earth does is how well it shows the over view of the land. Some shots are taken in high Earth altitudes while others are from space showing the landscape and everything around it. The space shots are also one of my favorite things to look at.The bad thing though is that I had to wait three days; however I did save myself around twenty dollars, so it was worth the wait. So it came with multiple disks with around three to four episodes of Planet Earth on each of the disks. If you did not know already each episode of Planet Earth is one hour long. So once I put in Planet Earth to view on our HDTV I went to the menu of the first disk for the first episode. As you can imagine it was quite amazing how well the picture looked. All of the landscapes were full as can be in color and the animals looked as if they were flowing across the screen as they moved. I was impressed also on how well Planet Earth was filmed with a HDTV camera. Some of the animals they film in the movie looks as if they are right there next to them and the animals are not even being disturbed by them being around. It is truly the most amazing documentary of its type. One episode that really impressed me is the freshwater one.Of course on our HDTV it looks as good as it possibly can but it gives you a feeling of how small the Earth really is but at the same time when it talks about some of the environments it feels that the world is very large. When you are watching Planet Earth you may get to an environment that they begin to talk about that just looks alien to you. Some of the things that are in the environment look as if it was not real and you can not even imagine about being in some of these places in real life.

One that really shows what I am talking about is the caves episode. Basically what it shows you is the underground world of Earth. How things form under the surface and the weird little creatures that inhabit the caves. It is truly something that will be hard for most people living on the planet Earth to believe once they have seen some of the amazing animals that live on it. This documentary is truly amazing especially if viewed on a HDTV!

HDTV: How to Make the Most Out of It

If you own an HDTV, then you are lucky. You are one of the few who can take advantage of this amazing technology. With it, it is as if you are watching your favorite movie or television program right inside a theater. The images are clear and crisp, and the sound is very sharp.

2. Set the right brightness level. Another thing that you may want to adjust is the brightness of your television. If everything appears to be dark, you want to increase the brightness level; however, this is not completely advisable since you will also reduce the saturation of the color. The images will not be very vivid. It is also not a good idea to set the brightness level too low, because you will not be able to create the details of the shadows. You cannot also separate the dark from the light areas. For you to be able to properly control the contrast level, you can watch a show or a movie that will take you to a sequence with a white object. To give you an example, you can watch Bruce Almighty and freeze the screen where you can see Morgan Freeman. He is dressed all white, but there are also other colored details around. Set the contrast level to its highest, and then slowly reduce it until you can clearly see all the details of the white object. Perhaps you want to see the buttons of his shirt or the linings of his pocket. What you can do is to avoid the light from directly reflecting into the screen. It will create glare, and it will make it more difficult for you to see the images very clearly. You can also make use of daylight bulbs, or place the light just behind the television. When you do so, you can have the rest of the room dark. You can solve the problem by simply choosing the best input device for your HDTV. You can ask for recommendation from the seller or from the service provider or manufacturer of the HDTV. You can also place a DVD into the letterbox bars. You can also determine if there is something wrong with the brightness level by looking into the eyes of the people on the screen. If their eyebrow appears to be more prominent and you can hardly see the eyes anymore, there is a huge chance that the level of brightness is too low.1. Adjust the room lighting. You can definitely adjust the size of the screen, but you would be able to watch all your favorite shows and TV programs more effectively if you do so in a controlled lighting. Usually, people have the hobby of watching television when everything seems dark. In case you do not know, it will cause strain in your eyes, and you will develop headaches later on.3. Check the contrast level. Not a lot of HDTV buyers actually know that when you purchase the unit, the contrast level is set to the maximum. This is how the stores are able to showcase the vivid colors of the images, considering that the lights can be very strong. If you are not going to adjust it, though, there is a huge probability that you may suffer from eye strain, especially if you are going to watch the television in very dim rooms. It will also destroy the quality of your TV. You would also not reduce the contrast level too low, or you will also reduce the quality of the images on your television.HDTV can provide you a real entertainment deal, but you will definitely learn to appreciate it more if you can set the colors right. However, it will definitely spoil all the fun when you realize that you are not getting what you have expected from an HDTV. For one, the image may not be clear at all. If you are having this trouble, then perhaps you need to do the following:

HDTV can provide you a real entertainment deal, but you will definitely learn to appreciate it more if you can set the colors right.

The path of United States HDTV world

The path of United States HDTV world: A brief on United States HDTV

By the end of 1988, 23 different proposals for HDTV or EDTV standards were submitted. These were all analog (or mixed analog/digital systems like MUSE) and explored a variety of different options for resolution, interlace and bandwidth.15years ealier back to year 1987, the FCC issued a ruling signifying that the HDTV standards to be issued would be compatible with existing NTSC service, and would be restricted to the existing VHF and UHF frequency bands.Early 1990, the FCC announced that HDTV would be simultaneously broadcast with full HDTV standard, rather than the reduced resolution EDTV. A big leap forward, although its still remains in analog form.It is amazing to see that despite short history of HDTV in the nation, HDTV started to play a major role in United States home entertainment system. Thanks to satellite TV service provider who continuously pushes it hard to the market. How does HDTV land on U.S.?But U.S. HDTV world did not wait long to get "digitized". A few months later on May 31, 1990 General Instrument Corp. submitted the first proposal for an all digital HDTV system. By December 1990, ATRC announced its digital entry in HDTV system, followed quickly by Zenith HDTV and AT&T, then MIT. Thus there were four serious contenders for digital HDTV system in the United States, as well as a modified "narrow" MUSE and an EDTV proposal. These systems were then tested in year 1991-1992.Teddy Low
Webmaster
http://www.satellitetvissue.comThe history of High definition television, HDTV in United States can be recalled back to 15years ago.During 1994, the system was constructed and 1995 is slated for testing. If all goes well, the FCC may be setting this standard by the end of 1995.

EPIX Gives Fans Something to Tweet About

Britney Spears: Femme Fatale Premieres in November on Epix and EpixHD.com

NEW YORK -- Britney Spears’ sold-out Femme Fatale tour is coming in November to EPIX, the cross platform premium entertainment service available on television, on demand, online and on Internet-connected devices. There is a wrong, yet widespread belief that you need more antenna gain to receive digital television. I don't know where the hell this belief comes from, cause the situation is exactly the opposite. HDTV has much better noise and interference immunity than the analog television and can produce high quality video at significantly lower signal-to-noise ratios. As has become the custom, EPIX will once again present the closed-captioned simulcast of both fights on a jumbotron in Times Square (Broadway between 44th and 45th Sts.), beginning at 5 p.m. ET.https://rcpt.yousendit.com/1194052339/07e672acf0668f9afaa805a48e425283“I have won the Olympic gold medal and I have been World and European Amateur Champion. Now I want to finally accomplish my goal of winning the world title as a professional,” added Povetkin. “I have a lot of respect for Chagaev, but he will not get in my way.”“Povetkin is a strong fighter, but I want to become world champion again and win back my old title. I am highly motivated,” said Chagaev. All television broadcasts, digital and analog, are in the VHF and UHF bands. Over 90% of the HDTV broadcasts are in the UHF, and less than 10% in the VHF band. What is important from the antenna perspective is that HDTV falls in the bandwidth of a regular VHF/UHF antenna. Not HDTV antenna, not HDTV optimized antenna, just a normal regular TV antenna. What makes a signal to be HD is its content, the way a signal is modulated, and not the carrier frequency it is transmitted on. On the contrary, the antenna knows nothing about the signal modulation and content. Hence, you don't need an HDTV antenna to pick up the HD signal. An antenna has absolutely no idea what the signal resolution is. It can be HDTV, SDTV, NTSC, whatever. It is the job of a HDTV tuner and HD television set to demodulate the signal and to present the actual content on the screen.Helenius (15-0, 10 KOs), a native of Finland who fights out of Berlin, Germany, will be looking to make Liakhovich his third former heavyweight champion knockout victim having already starched Lamon Brewster and Samuel Peter in eight and nine rounds, respectively. There is nothing specific about a TV antenna that is used to receive HDTV. When choosing an HDTV antenna, check the really important parameters such as directivity, gain, F/B ratio. These specifications are important for reception of both, digital and analog broadcasts. The HDTV optimization is probably the least important factor you should take into account. The battle between the two highest world-rated heavyweight contenders will be televised live in the U.S. exclusively on EPIX, the multiplatform premium entertainment service. EpixHD.com will stream the fight live as part of a free two-week trial offer. No Such Thing As an HDTV Antenna!

Over-the-air (OTA) HDTV becomes more and more popular. For someone who is used to noisy analog TV pictures, it is hard to believe how amazing a quality of HDTV broadcasts can be. In fact, HDTV channels received over the air free of charge often have better quality than the same channels received through a paid satellite HDTV subscription. All you need to enjoy OTA HDTV is a HD television with a built-in HDTV tuner and an HDTV antenna.

As viewers increasingly become active participants in their own entertainment, EPIX is pursuing a cross platform strategy to tap and engage large fan bases online, offering unique access and engagement with their favorite artists. Recent examples include July’s Shatnerpalooza campaign which reached ten million Star Trek fans with the world premiere of William Shatner's original film, The Captains. Other fan favorites presented this year include Bon Jovi, Eddie Izzard, Craig Ferguson and Kevin Smith, whose EPIX Live online chat drew over ten thousand fans who then viewed his exclusive special Too Fat for Forty on EpixHD.com.For more information about EPIX, go to www.EpixHD.com. If you have Ph.D in Electrical Engineering and have never heard about the antenna type called "HDTV antenna", it's not because you were a bad student. HDTV antenna has nothing to do with physics and engineering. It was invented in marketing departments. Marketing found an effective trick to boost TV antenna sales. HDTV is a hot thing these days. Call essentially the same device HDTV antenna, and it sells better. It makes people to believe they must buy an HDTV model or HDTV optimized antenna to watch HDTV broadcasts. This is very far from truth.EPIX, a joint venture between Viacom Inc. (NYSE: VIA and VIA.B), its Paramount Pictures unit, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc. An antenna has other important electrical and spatial properties, such as antenna gain (directivity) and high front-to-back (F/B) ratio. One might assume that an HDTV antenna should be more powerful in terms of F/B and gain parameters. Does HDTV reception impose more stringent requirements on antenna gain and F/B ratio?About EPIXEPIX, a joint venture between Viacom Inc. DTV exhibits at CES — diversity, unresolved issues

High-definition (HD) demonstrations predominated at CES, seen on selection of display types and sizes that ranged from 30W direct-view by JVC to 55-through-73W rear projection sets to larger images screened by front projectors. Some brands also demonstrated sets showing standard definition (SD) pictures, mostly on direct-view models or plasma panels such as 46W Mitsubishi DiamondPanel. In most cases, set-top box (STB) was used to feed signal to HD or SD video monitor, but rear-projection DTVs including Hitachi, Samsung and Thomson ProScan models were finished sets with DTV receiver/decoder built in.

About ZiXi Founded in 2006, ZiXi has pioneered a proven, award-winning video transport platform that enables the delivery of flawless, broadcast-quality HD video over the Internet. ZiXi's patented technology dynamically resolves the problems inherent to the Internet to deliver low-latency video of unprecedented quality with no jitter, packet loss or frame freeze, regardless of network conditions -- transforming the Internet into a broadcast-quality, global HD video delivery network. Broadcasters, enterprises and video service providers around the world use ZiXi's on-premise and cloud-based solutions and services to enrich user experience, create new services and significantly reduce costs. For more information visit: www.zixi.us .TV makers wouldn't estimate prices for direct-view sets, although some put tentative stickers on rear-projection models, such as $5,000-$7,000 for Samsung 55W, $7,000 for Thomson 61W, $10,000 for 58W by Runco. From our inquiries at factory level, though, it appeared likely that direct-view HD sets could approach price at low end of projection scale - especially if already expensive tubes used for HD system in Japan are imported. That would add hefty tariff to cost of set even before DTV chassis is factored in. Sony wouldn't say whether it would import its flat FD-Trinitron HD tube or begin to manufacture CRT at its Pittsburgh or San Diego plants. But one source told us U.S. is most likely place to expand company's picture tube operations.ZiXi will be exhibiting at IBC Connected World, Stand Number 13.351."ZiXi is honored to emerge as a finalist among the many companies that were evaluated by the esteemed ConnectedWorld.TV Awards judging panel," said Israel Drori, CEO of ZiXi. "This nomination, along with the Broadcast Engineering Award we won at the 2011 National Association of Broadcasters Show, further validates the superior quality of our video delivery technology and the value it brings to the entire broadcast industry."The ConnectedWorld.TV Awards, in association with IBC, celebrate the creativity of broadcasters, independent producers, technology companies and consumer electronics manufacturers pioneering the business of "content everywhere." Judged by an international panel of 15 independent experts from the television and content industries, the Awards showcase the many exciting developments arising from the growing use of the Internet as an alternative distribution channel for TV and video content. They will be presented at a prestigious black-tie gala dinner at the Hotel Okura Amsterdam on Monday, September 12, 2011, the penultimate night of IBC.ZiXi's on-premise solution and cloud-based services enable broadcasters to leverage the limitless capacity and flexible, any-to-any outreach of the Internet. With ZiXi, broadcasters can distribute any content to cable TV head-ends and satellite direct-to-home systems, or pull affiliate and field content to their headquarters or larger news centers. This is all performed securely and at the highest video quality, with no jitters or pauses, and up to 256-bit AES security.

Despite strong DTV emphasis at CES, organizer CEMA said total "verified" attendance declined 4.3% from year earlier to 91,614. CEMA blamed "shortfall" on large attendance declines in 3 "non-germane" attendee categories - manufacturer reps, non-exhibiting manufacturers, guests. It said declines were attributable to "industry conditions" and Asian financial crisis. However, CEMA sought to emphasize positive attendance results, including: (1) Final tally exceeded preshow estimates of 90,000. (2) "Modest" increases in buyer and exhibitor attendance. (3) Engineers increased 18%, presumably because more than usual number of broadcasters attended show and Digital AV Conference immediately followed CES. CEMA didn't have immediate breakout of number of broadcasters present.

New DSS dish and receivers planned

First programming to come from additional bird will be 6 channels of foreign-language offerings, DirecTV spokesman said, with potential expansion to 20. New platform on Galaxy III-R satellite also will serve to launch additional HD-DSS channels. DirecTV will transmit 2 channels of HD programming from current satellite in fall (TVD Jan 12 p11). Spokesman told us DirecTV has option to lease additional transponders on satellite that would give it ability to offer up to 120 new channels in addition to current 175. New channels could be used for special interest programs and business-to-business applications.

Ethnic programming will begin by 3rd quarter, with Hughes Network Systems (HNS) to offer first receivers capable of receiving signals from 2 satellites, DirecTV and HNS announced. They said larger, 21x35 [inches] elliptical antenna will be needed to scoop signals from satellites 6 [degrees] apart. Because HD channels won't be extended to Galaxy bird until installed based of DTV sets and HD-DSS receivers grows, early adopters can use current 18 [inches] dish unless they also want ethnic channels, DirecTV spokesman told us. Thomson spokesman confirmed that DTV sets co-produced with Hitachi will have 2-satellite DSS receiver.

International Broadcast Convention (IBC) Selects ZiXi as a Finalist for the ConnectedWorld.TV Awards

ZiXi, the leading provider of solutions and services that enable flawless broadcast-quality HDTV via the Internet, today announced that it has been selected as a finalist for the inaugural ConnectedWorld.TV awards, to be presented at the International Broadcast Convention (IBC) in Amsterdam on September 12th, 2011. ZiXi is shortlisted in the Content Delivery Technology category for its patented video transport platform and superior broadcast-quality HD video delivery services via the Internet for a variety of applications, including video distribution, field and mobile reporting, collaboration, playout and TV everywhere services.

Thomson gave us indication that $3,000 is likely price for direct-view set using its HD 34W and 38W tubes. Robert-Lorch, vp-N. American Tube Div., said company is targeting under-$1,000 cost for tubes with late 1999 delivery. Tubes, he told us, could be used for either HD or SD resolution - HD when fitted with fine - pitch Invar shadow mask and dynamic - focus electron gun. In that case, tube has 1,280x720 pixel resolution that qualifies for HD format.Add to Digg Bookmark with del.icio.us Add to NewsvineDespite strong DTV emphasis at CES, organizer CEMA said total "verified" attendance declined 4.3% from year earlier to 91,614. Onscreen user interface enabling viewers to select program if station sends multiple shows still needs to be worked out among broadcasters and TV makers. Also pertaining to SD multicasts, no standard yet exists for conditional - access system needed in case stations institute pay-per-view. And although video and audio formats for DTV are settled, work still is needed for data transmissions and interactive functions that have been posited as value-added features for DTV.Also emblematic of diversity at CES was variety of ways manufacturers will handle conversion of NTSC and SD broadcasts, and troublesome 720p HD format. For example, Hitachi and Thomson digitally convert NTSC to 540p display and HD-720p to HD-1080i, while Panasonic opted to line-double NTSC and downshift 720p to 480p. Samsung's set digitizes NTSC, then bumps it up to 1080i - also resolution where SD signals and 720p are displayed. Sony uses its Digital Reality Creation system to display NTSC and SD as 960i. Company told us it will scan convert 720p to either 480p or 1080i.Observers noted variations in quality among brands, much of it probably attributable to prototype status. DTV sets displayed at CES didn't show "full quality" of HDTV, said Jack Fuhrer, senior dir.-Hitachi Digital Media Lab. He and other speakers at DTV seminar concurred that sets on exhibit didn't even clearly show differences between HD-1080i and SD-480p formats. Fuhrer said "dazzling" 480p demonstrations can look as good as "mediocre" HD, at least to public. He added, though, that lower resolution displays won't get better but HDTV will. ATSC Chmn. Robert Graves contended that there has been little incentive to improve TV receivers for last decade or so because they already were using full NTSC capability. "There's a tremendous amount of headroom in HDTV," he said, so set-makers will compete to improve picture quality, at least in first few years after rollout: "The HDTV you see today is the worst you will ever see."

Novel VCRs and camcorders make CES debut

Fall launch of DTV broadcasts and high-definition DSS (HD-DSS) satellite channels has rekindled interest in availability of digital VCRs. At CES, licensor JVC demonstrated prototype D-VHS deck operating in HD mode needed for terrestrial DTV, but offered no timetable for announcing standard. Hitachi meanwhile touted merits of current D-VHS model, co-developed with Thomson, for recording HD-DSS signal. But digital VCRs will have negligible impact this year, which CEMA consensus forecast said would see slight gains for analog video recording devices (TVD Jan 12 p15). VCRs, camcorders and TV/VCR combos each achieved record year in 1997 (see related report, this issue).

Energy_ Star rating also will appear on RCA-brand VCRs. Line ranges from $179 to $329 and includes 5 hi-fi decks, 3 mono 4-head VCRs, single mono 2-head entry. Besides under 4 w standby mode, VCRs have automatic turn-off function when VCR power remains on during long period on nonuse. RCA said auto-off function also would prevent user from missing time-shift recordings by inadvertently leaving VCR on.Top-of-line TwinCam has 2 discrete lenses that can be used separately or in tandem - one is fixed-focus wide-angle, other is variable focal-length zoom (10x optical, 20x digital). When used together, camcorder records panoramic background through wide-angle optic, with closeup from zoom recorded as picture-in-picture - although viewpoints can be swapped as main image is seen in 4[inches] LCD and on 8mm tape. Camcorder has automatic fader for smooth transitions between lenses. Not only that, if you were to play a video game that you play oft in HD and then switched it over to standard definition it would be enough to make your self displeased. Also it is a great excuse for you to go out and buy a HD DVD player. That way you can start buying HD movies and when you see an ad on TV about a flick and it says also comes in HD you can go out and buy it. The only down side to buying HD movies is the increase in cost of the movie. You can ordinarily get a normal DVD at around twenty dollars, for a HD film you will be spending up wards to around thirty dollars. In order to browse the internet, the handset relies primarily on 3G coverage, whereby an HSDPA connection provides download speeds of up to 7.2 Mbps. An enhanced web connection can be achieved however, thanks to full Wi-Fi connectivity. This provides a faster and more reliable connection whenever users have the appropriate access to local wireless networks. At CES, Sony showed unique digital feature in 2 hi-fi VCRs and new adhesive label for videocassettes. Company's SmartFile system has memory chip on cassette label that stores list of contents and time-durations when programs are recorded on new $499 and $449 VCRs. Later, user simply holds cassette in front of VCR to get onscreen readout of its contents, including amount of blank-tape time left. For home theater audio, Panasonic added VCRs with Spatializer feature that simulates surround sound ambience from 2 loudspeakers, including TV set's stereo pair. System is in 2 of company's 5 hi-fi VCRs and 27[inches] hi-fi TVCR combo. Another 2 hi-fi VCRs comply with Environmental Protection Agency's Energy Star program, which requires VCRs to consume less than 4 w in standby mode. Panasonic also introduced two 4-head VCRs but just one 2-head model, priced at $150. TVCR combo line includes 2 models in 27[inches] and 3 in 20[inches], with one hi-fi entry per category, and 4 combos in 13[inches]. All have FM radio built in. Company's Quasar brand has 20[inches] and 13[inches] TVCRs available in black or white; and single hi-fi, 4- and 2-head mono VCRs. Latter has $140 price tag. All Panasonic and Quasar VCRs, and TVCRs under 20[inches], qualify for Energy Star logo.NightShot camcorders have $799-$1,399 price range and will ship next month and in March, sources said. Optional beam that attaches to HandyCams with NightShot receptor extends range to 100 ft. New Sony line begins at $599 for 8mm model with color viewfinder and conventional light; 7 models in line have color LCD monitors in 2.5-4[inches] range, we were told. All models also can use optional lithium-ion battery rated for 12 hours' recording time. Sony, which first produced and introduced that battery chemistry for camcorders, will offer it exclusively in future, sources said. The manufacturers seem to have hit the nail on the head, and have come up with the perfect product to dominate the luxury smartphone market. But its not just the aesthetics and branding that make the Samsung Galaxy S Giorgio Armani such an appealing phone; its spec list is every bit as impressive as the majority of the smartphones currently available.Although Toshiba wins Energy Star for all TVs 27[inches] and up, including projection sets, company hasn't staked claim for its 10-model VCR line that includes 7 hi-fi models, with single 2-head deck at $180. Of hi-fi VCRs, 4 use Toshiba's V3 chassis with flying preamp built into 6-head drum, which has separate 19-micron heads to yield SP quality in EP mode. Company will continue to build those in its own plants in Japan. Toshiba Vp-Video Mktg. Stephen Nickerson confirmed that rest of line will be sourced from Shintom.Unique feature making comeback is dual-lens system from Sharp. Company is reintroducing 1992-vintage TwinCam function in new SlimCam line, which has conventional fore-and-aft camcorder styling with flip-out LCD monitor that supplements color eye-level viewfinder, compared with camera-style ViewCams that have rear-mount LCD panel. New SlimCams ($799-$999) are just 2-1/4[inches] wide and weigh under 1-1/2 lbs.Progressive-scan recording is latest trend in digital video camcorders, now employed in JVC's new GR-DVL9000 CyberCam ($2,799) following introduction in Canon Optura last Sept. Each company touts 480p vertical resolution for digital stills and for sharper images when viewing freeze-frames of fast-action motion video such as sports. Like Canon Optura, new CyberCam has IEEE-1394 output for direct digital connection to PCs and other devices with digital input such as JVC's new DV-GT1 multimedia color printer ($1,000). Company also previewed prototype of its first digital still camera, along with printer about size of CD jewelbox for making wallet-size snapshots. Tiny digital camera uses removable CompactFlash memory, JVC spokesman said. No prices or delivery dates were announced. Also at CES, Ricoh introduced "sub-$1,000" digital camera with choice of SXGA megapixel resolution or 640x480 pixel VGA.A simplified way to explain it is that the resolution of the image is greatly improved. Improved? One may ask, well yes that is just it. So you should go out right now and see for your self. Now back to video games on a HDTV. For starters the image is much clearer. When it is not in HD the image has what looks like to be a fuzz effect going on with it. Now if you are one of those people that have never seen HD then you will not note it and would have to look for it. But if you do have a HDTV and play your video games on it normally you will in fact observe a fundamental difference the calibre of picture.Consumer industry first is Sony night-vision feature that company is expected to introduce Jan. 22 in half-dozen Hi8 camcorders among 10 new HandyCams. Sources told us feature is called NightShot and projects infrared light to illuminate subject up to 10 ft. away; user sees monochrome green image in viewfinder and on recorded tape. "If you were in a pitch black room where you couldn't see your hand in front of your face, you could read text from 10 feet away," said source who saw demonstration. Function has been incorporated in video surveillance and security products in past, but not in consumer camcorders.JVC's DualCam and Panasonic's PhotoShot Palmcorder each is claimed to be industry "first" with built-in flash memory for digital still photos and direct output to PC for subsequent manipulation or communication. Actually, function was featured first in add-on module in 2 Sharp Digital ViewCams (TVD Nov 25/96 p10). Analog VHS-C model from JVC ($1,000) stores 44 standard- or 22 fine-mode stills and has 22x zoom lens, while 2 Panasonic models have storage for 30 shots and 23x optical zoom.Otherwise, camcorders are similar, with 3[inches] flip out color LCD monitor, built-in auto light, direct connection to PC, bundled software for photo enhancement. Panasonic models ($1,100 and $1,000) also offer motion and audio sensor for automatic recording, including time-lapse mode that records every 3fd frame to get 6 hours' storage from 40 min. tape. Panasonic line includes 3 Palmcorders ($700-$900) similar to PhotoShots but without digital-still feature, while sibling Quasar brand has one. Panasonic also introduced $500 and $600 camcorders without flip-out LCD monitor.

Progressive-scan recording is latest trend in digital video camcorders, now employed in JVC's new GR-DVL9000 CyberCam ($2,799) following introduction in Canon Optura last Sept.
